The NBA imposed a $100,000 fine on the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday for breaking the rules on reporting injuries. This happened because initially, the team said Joel Embiid wouldn’t play in a game, but later, he did.
Embiid had been out for 29 games due to knee surgery before returning on Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. At first, the team said he wouldn’t play, but then they changed it to questionable in the afternoon.
Teams are supposed to say if a player might not play due to injury by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game, unless there’s a back-to-back. They can update this report throughout the day.
The NBA considered the 76ers’ history of breaking these rules. Earlier in February, they were fined $75,000 for not reporting Embiid’s injury correctly before a game against Denver on Jan. 27. He ended up having knee surgery shortly after.
