Joe Kinnear, a former player for Tottenham and manager for Wimbledon and Newcastle, passed away at 77. His family confirmed his death on Sunday.
“We are saddened to announce that Joe passed away peacefully this afternoon surrounded by his family,” a statement from his family said.
Kinnear, who had been battling dementia since 2015 according to his wife Bonnie, had a significant career in both playing and managing. Wimbledon, one of his former clubs, expressed their sorrow, calling him a “true legend” who left behind cherished memories.
Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, also paid tribute to Kinnear, emphasizing his lasting impact on the football club.
In addition to his time at Wimbledon and Newcastle, Kinnear managed other clubs such as Luton and Nottingham Forest. He played successfully, making over 250 appearances for Tottenham and winning several titles.
Kinnear began his coaching journey in Asia before moving to management roles in England. He led Wimbledon to big achievements before health issues forced him to step down.
Despite health setbacks, Kinnear contributed to football, taking on roles at various clubs until his passing.
