In a surprising turn of events, the New York Jets have decided to part ways with quarterback Zach Wilson, whom they drafted with the No. 2 pick in 2021. Wilson will now be joining the Denver Broncos, a source confirmed to ESPN on Monday.
Despite the high expectations placed on Wilson after being selected in the first round, the Jets have opted to trade him to the Broncos for what appears to be a minimal return.
In exchange, the Jets will receive a sixth-round selection (No. 203) in this week’s NFL draft, along with a seventh-round pick (No. 256). Additionally, both teams will split the $5.5 million salary Wilson is owed for the upcoming season.
With this trade, Wilson becomes the latest quarterback from the 2021 draft class to depart from his original team, joining Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones. Only Trevor Lawrence, picked first overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars, remains with his original team.
The decision to trade Wilson comes as no surprise, as the Jets had previously granted him permission to explore potential trade opportunities.
Wilson expressed a desire for a fresh start after experiencing challenges during his tenure with the Jets, including a stint as a backup last season.
As the Jets move forward without Wilson, they will rely on Aaron Rodgers and newly signed backup Tyrod Taylor to lead the quarterback position. However, there is speculation that the Jets may look to draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft to secure their future post-Rodgers.
On the other hand, Wilson’s arrival provides the Broncos with added flexibility as they navigate their quarterback situation following the departure of Russell Wilson.
With the No. 12 pick in the first round, the Broncos are expected to select a quarterback in the draft to bolster their roster.
The trade marks a significant shift for both the Jets and the Broncos as they seek to solidify their quarterback positions and position themselves for success in the upcoming season.
