Crystal Palace secured their spot in the Premier League by defeating Newcastle 2-0 on Wednesday.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored in his fifth consecutive home game, ensuring the victory and continuing Palace’s recent success under Oliver Glasner, who led the team to wins against West Ham and Liverpool.
Mateta broke the deadlock at Selhurst Park with a clever goal in the 55th minute, before adding another late in the game, ending Newcastle’s four-match unbeaten streak.
With this win, Palace now sits comfortably in 14th place in the standings, 14 points above the relegation zone. Luton, currently in 18th place, only has four games left to play.
Mateta’s first goal came after a well-executed one-two with Jordan Ayew, followed by a composed finish.
This victory marked Palace’s first goal against Newcastle in seven encounters.
Despite Newcastle’s late efforts to equalize, Palace secured the win in the 88th minute.
Will Hughes and substitute Jeffrey Schlupp combined well to set up Mateta, who scored his eighth goal in nine games since Glasner took charge in February.
