Michael Massey smashed a two-run homer, while Cole Ragans struck out nine batters in his longest outing of the season, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night, breaking a three-game losing streak.
Ragans looked strong against Toronto, according to Royals manager Matt Quatraro. He had his best performance of the year, throwing accurate pitches and getting quick outs early in the game.
Bobby Witt Jr. also played a key role, reaching base three times and driving in a run as the Royals finished April with a 17-11 record, their most wins in a month since June 2017.
“We’re doing well, but winning in April doesn’t guarantee playoffs,” said Massey. “We need to keep pushing.”
Ragans, who improved to 2-0 against Toronto, allowed just one run and four hits before leaving the game due to cramps in his calf after walking two consecutive batters.
“We need to hydrate him and let the cramps settle,” Quatraro explained. “It’s the longest he’s pitched this season, so it’s likely just fatigue.”
John Schreiber stepped in and got the final out of the inning, while James McArthur closed the game, earning his seventh save in eight opportunities.
Although José Berríos pitched well for the Blue Jays, allowing only two runs and five hits over seven innings, he couldn’t secure the win, falling to Ragans for the second time in a row.
“I’ve been feeling strong physically and mentally,” said Berríos. “I want to keep improving.”
Massey, who struck out to end Monday’s game, came back strong on Tuesday, hitting a home run off Berríos in the second inning, marking his first homer of the season.
“I know there will be tough nights, but I’ll keep competing and sticking to my process,” Massey said.
