RJ Davis, who earned a spot in the first-team Associated Press All-American lineup, has decided to return to North Carolina for his fifth year of college basketball. This could potentially put him in the running for the school and Atlantic Coast Conference career scoring record.
The decision was announced by both the school and Davis on social media platforms Wednesday.
Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds, the guard averaged 21.2 points per game, leading the ACC and ranking 16th in Division I scoring.
He also showcased impressive shooting skills, with a 39.8% accuracy from 3-point range and an 87.3% success rate from the foul line. His standout performance includes a record-breaking 42-point game against Miami, setting a new high for any player in the Smith Center, UNC’s home arena since January 1986.
Davis began his college career during the 2020-21 season, which was played amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the circumstances, players competing that year were granted an additional year of eligibility. With 2,088 career points, Davis currently holds the fifth spot on the school’s career scoring list.
If he maintains the same level of performance as last season (784 points), he could tie the ACC career scoring record set by program legend Tyler Hansbrough (2,872 points).
Davis played a key role in leading the Tar Heels to their first ACC outright regular-season championship since 2017, as well as securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
