Giancarlo Stanton hit a double that tied the game in the ninth inning, and Anthony Rizzo followed with a single that won the game for the New York Yankees, giving them a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

After being kept quiet with just two hits in the first eight innings, the Yankees suddenly got four hits in a row against closer Jason Foley (2-1) in the ninth.

Aaron Judge started the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on Alex Verdugo’s bunt single to third base.

Then, Stanton, who had struck out in his previous three at-bats, hit a double to the opposite field, landing it in the right-field corner despite a sinker clocking at 97 mph, leaving runners at second and third.

It was the first time this season that Stanton got a hit on a pitch that fast.

Rizzo then hit a single that went past the diving second baseman Andy Ibáñez and through the drawn-in infield. Foley, who grew up on Long Island nearby, had previously converted 14 straight save chances since June 18 last year.
