Trevor Williams had an impressive night on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings without letting the Orioles score. Washington’s aggressive base-running also played a crucial role, with the team stealing four bases in their 3-0 win against Corbin Burnes and the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. This victory pushed the Nationals above .500 for the first time since July 2021.
Burnes, despite his efforts, couldn’t contain the Nationals’ offense, allowing three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. This was the first time in four games that a Baltimore starter gave up any runs and the first time in eight games that the Orioles allowed more than two runs as a team.
While the Orioles lost for only the second time in eight games, they faced their second shutout defeat during that stretch.
Williams, supported by solid relief pitching, limited Baltimore to just two hits and no walks. Kyle Finnegan closed the game with a perfect ninth inning, securing his 12th save in 13 chances.
Reflecting on their performance, Williams expressed confidence in the team’s ability, emphasizing their belief in themselves as a strong unit.
The Nationals’ aggressive approach, particularly in base-running, paid off. In the first inning, Luis García Jr. walked, stole second base, but Burnes managed to strike out the next three batters. However, in the second inning, Jesse Winker’s single followed by a stolen base set the stage for Joey Meneses’ RBI single, contributing to Washington’s win.
