Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela each had four hits out of Boston’s season-high 24. Duran started the game with his third career leadoff homer.
Valdez added a three-run homer against White Sox starter Jake Woodford (0-2) in the fourth inning, helping Boston take a 7-0 lead. Pinch hitter Jamie Westbrook hit his first major league homer in the seventh inning, contributing to another comfortable win for the Red Sox after defeating Atlanta 9-0 on Wednesday.
Manager Alex Cora praised the team’s performance, especially Tanner Houck’s dominant pitching.
For the White Sox, it was a tough game with season highs in hits allowed and a 12-run difference.
Shortstop Paul DeJong acknowledged the difficulty but emphasized the importance of moving on and focusing on the next game.
Houck (6-5) allowed two runs and three hits while striking out nine without issuing a walk. He only allowed one runner through the first five innings.
Chicago managed to score in the sixth inning with Lenyn Sosa hitting a leadoff single and later scoring on Zach DeLoach’s double. Andrew Vaughn hit a home run for Chicago in the seventh inning.
Woodford struggled, giving up seven runs and 10 hits in four innings.
Former White Sox closer Liam Hendriks and starter Lucas Giolito returned to Chicago, but both are still recovering from elbow surgery. They were part of previous playoff teams and witnessed the team’s decline.
