Bryce Harper left the field with a possible hamstring injury after making the final out for the Philadelphia Phillies in their 7-4 defeat against the Miami Marlins on Thursday night.
Trying to beat out a grounder to the right side, Harper grabbed his left hamstring as he crossed first base and limped towards the dugout. He will have imaging done on Friday to assess the extent of the injury.
“I felt some discomfort in my lower hamstring. We’ll get it checked out tomorrow and see what’s going on,” Harper said. “I’ll see how I feel tomorrow and take it from there.”
Kyle Schwarber, Harper’s teammate, also suffered an injury. He left the game in the ninth inning due to tightness in his left groin after an awkward throw from the outfield. Schwarber, typically a designated hitter, started in left field for just the third time this season.
“I went to grab the ball with my bare hand and planted to make the throw, and that’s when I felt it,” Schwarber explained. “Initially, I thought it might be a cramp, and I finished the inning. But when I was running in between innings, I still felt it, so I talked to the trainer. He didn’t like the feel of it, so he wanted me to come out.”
Harper mentioned he has not had many soft-tissue injuries before and felt discomfort halfway down the first baseline. When asked about his level of concern, he expressed caution.
“I’m not sure,” Harper responded. “As I said, this is new to me. It’s painful.”
Earlier in the day, Harper was chosen by fans to start at first base for the National League in the All-Star Game on July 16 in Texas. Schwarber is among six other Phillies players vying to start in their respective positions in the next round of voting.
