Pro Football Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson has been selected to join the “Pride of the Lions,” a distinction that will permanently display his name at Ford Field.
Mike Disner, Detroit Lions’ chief operating officer, surprised Johnson with this announcement during his foundation’s golf outing on Monday.
Johnson will be the 21st former player to receive this honor, with the induction scheduled for September 30 during halftime of the Lions’ “Monday Night Football” game against Seattle.
Team president Rod Wood praised Johnson’s dedication both on the field and to the city of Detroit, calling the recognition well-deserved. Johnson was drafted by Detroit as the No. 2 pick from Georgia Tech in 2007 and retired in 2015 at age 30.
Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, Johnson, nicknamed “Megatron” for his athletic prowess, set a record in 2012 with 1,964 yards receiving, surpassing a mark previously held by Jerry Rice.
A three-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl player, Johnson reached 10,000 and 11,000 yards receiving faster than any other player in NFL history, achieving these milestones in 115 and 127 games, respectively.
