The Cowboys’ Chief Operating Officer Stephen Jones believes that an 18-game NFL regular season is inevitable. He thinks the players will support it too.
Jones mentioned that adding another game to the regular season seems like a definite decision now. Despite concerns that players might oppose a longer season, Jones is optimistic.
He believes that once players see the financial benefits of an additional game and how much of that revenue they will receive, they will be in favor of it.
“I serve on the competition committee, and we’ve discussed this knowing it’s likely to happen,” Jones said on the Scoop City podcast.
“I do know that players appreciate the compensation they receive, as they get a significant portion of every dollar that comes in. So, with an 18-game season, we expect our revenue to increase, which should lead to better player compensation.”
Talk about moving to an 18-game season began almost immediately after the NFL started playing 17-game seasons in 2021. This discussion continues because the 17-game schedule is seen as a step toward achieving the NFL’s goal of an 18-game season.
