Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford is likely going on the injured list because he suffered a small fracture in his right pinky finger during Monday night’s 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
Crawford had to leave the game in the first inning after he was hit on the hand by a changeup thrown at 86 miles per hour by Angels pitcher Tyler Anderson.
Despite getting medical attention from the Mariners’ trainers, Crawford managed to finish running the bases and scored the Mariners’ only run of the game on a single hit by Cal Raleigh.
But in the second inning, Dylan Moore took Crawford’s place at shortstop, while Luke Raley stepped in at first base in place of Moore.
Mariners manager Scott Servais told reporters about Crawford’s injury after the game.
“There’s a small fracture there,” Servais said. “We’ll have more information after a specialist examines it.”
This will be Crawford’s second time on the injured list this season. He had previously been sidelined with a strained oblique muscle from April 25 until May 20, when he returned to the lineup after a brief rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Tacoma.
Crawford’s injury happened just one day after center fielder Julio Rodríguez left Sunday’s game due to a minor sprain in his right ankle. Rodríguez is still considered day-to-day.
“Challenges come at different times, and we’re facing one now,” Servais commented. “We’ll see a lot about our team and which players step up. J.P. was out earlier this season for a while, and we had players step up then, and that’s what we’ll need now.”
