Saints running back Alvin Kamara showed up for training camp and completed a conditioning test on Tuesday, despite feeling dissatisfied with his contract.

His decision to attend camp was a positive development for Saints coach Dennis Allen and general manager Mickey Loomis, especially after Kamara left minicamp in June due to slow progress in contract negotiations.

“I haven’t spoken with him today, but he’s here. I appreciate that he’s here,” Loomis commented.

Loomis also acknowledged that many within the organization, including players, coaches, and staff, feel they are underpaid and want better compensation. However, he emphasized Kamara’s commitment to being in good shape and focused on a successful season.

The Saints are set to begin their training camp practices on Wednesday at the University of California, Irvine. Players were not available for interviews on Tuesday.

Kamara, who will turn 29 on Thursday, still has two years remaining on his contract, but none of his over $22 million salary in 2025 is guaranteed. This means the Saints could save a significant amount by releasing Kamara next year if his performance or health becomes an issue this season.

Additionally, Kamara and the Saints offense will be adjusting to a new system under new coordinator Klint Kubiak this season.

“We’re excited to have him here, practicing, and working with us,” Allen said. “It’s crucial with the new offensive scheme that everyone gets valuable practice time.”

Allen noted that Kamara performed well in the conditioning test, indicating readiness for the upcoming season.
