Giants backup quarterback Drew Lock left the preseason opener against the Lions late in the first quarter due to a hip injury. Meanwhile, Detroit backup Hendon Hooker suffered a concussion during the second half.
Lock, who joined the Giants as a free agent this offseason, went down after throwing a deep pass to Isaiah McKenzie with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter of New York’s 14-3 win. Trainers attended to him before he went to the sideline.
Starting in place of Daniel Jones and most of the starting offense, Lock completed 4 of 10 passes for 17 yards before he was sacked. It was unclear exactly when the injury occurred.
Tommy DeVito, a local favorite, took over for Lock on a fourth-down play, but the Giants ended up punting after a delay of game penalty.
Lock mentioned after the game that he didn’t think the injury was serious and felt he could have returned if needed.
Lions coach Dan Campbell noted that Hooker got hurt while running after leaving the pocket. “That’s what happens when you run, in this league, at the quarterback position,” Campbell said. He praised Hooker for making good decisions with his legs before the injury.
Hooker and Nate Sudfeld are competing for the backup role behind Jared Goff, who did not play in the game.
In addition to Hooker, the Lions also had second-year receiver Antoine Green suffer a concussion, defensive lineman David Bada with an Achilles tendon injury, and offensive lineman Connor Galvin with a knee injury. Bada and Galvin were taken off the field in a cart.
