Russell Wilson is set to play when the Pittsburgh Steelers face the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin mentioned on Thursday that Wilson will join the starting lineup if his calf injury, which has been affecting him during training camp, doesn’t cause any further issues.

Tomlin noted that Wilson has had a few good days recently and that the injury is becoming less of a problem. “We look forward to him participating in this home venue,” Tomlin said.

The Steelers signed Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowler, to a one-year contract in March. Tomlin has indicated for months that Wilson, at 35, is in the lead to be the starting quarterback for the regular season.

This remains the case despite Wilson spending a lot of time with Justin Fields during camp to manage his calf issue.

Tomlin expects the starters to play around four series against Buffalo, although he said this plan is not set in stone.

Fields performed well in the Steelers’ preseason opener against Houston, completing 5 of 6 passes for 83 yards. However, he did have some trouble with the snap exchange with center Nate Herbig. Fields will also play against the Bills, but how much depends on how Wilson performs in the game.
