Patrick Mahomes threw a behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce during the Kansas City Chiefs’ second drive against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, adding some excitement to the preseason game.
As Mahomes was moving to his right and feeling pressure from Detroit’s Josh Paschal, he threw the ball behind his back to Kelce, who was running across the field.
This pass on third-and-3 at the Detroit 33 gained 9 yards for a first down and helped set up a field goal.
Although Mahomes has practiced behind-the-back throws, he had never done it successfully in a game before.
The play quickly went viral. Right after the throw, Jason Kelce, the retired Eagles center and Travis’s brother, tweeted: “The son of a gun actually did it!”
Mahomes is known for his daring throws, including no-look passes and throws while being sacked.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas also reacted, tweeting: “That was unnecessary, but beautiful!”
