Detroit Lions’ Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs is showing positive signs of recovery from a hamstring injury he sustained during practice last week. Head coach Dan Campbell provided an optimistic update, stating that Gibbs is “trending the right way” and is expected to participate in the team’s Week 1 game.

The Lions plan for Gibbs to return to practice following their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 24.

Campbell expressed a desire for more practice time with Gibbs but reassured that the running back’s health is improving as scheduled. Gibbs’ recovery timeline indicates that he will likely regain his fitness soon, with the team closely monitoring his progress. This approach aims to ensure that Gibbs is in good shape to contribute effectively once the regular season starts.

Gibbs, who is only 22 years old, left a night practice on August 12 due to a leg injury, which raised concerns as the exact nature of the injury was initially unclear. As a rookie in 2023, Gibbs had a significant impact on Detroit’s offense, rushing for 945 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns. Additionally, he contributed 316 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown, establishing himself as a versatile and valuable player for the team.

The Lions have been dealing with multiple injuries recently, affecting several key players, including Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive tackle Dan Skipper, offensive guard Kevin Zeitler, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and rookie defensive backs Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr.

Despite these setbacks, Campbell remains hopeful that most of these players, including Gibbs, will recover in time for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8.

Looking ahead, the Lions’ coaching staff is planning to have a more complete roster for practice sessions after the final preseason game. Campbell is optimistic that by the day after the Pittsburgh game, the majority of the injured players will be back, allowing them to prepare adequately for the Rams. This plan underscores the importance of having a healthy and prepared team as the regular season approaches.
