Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell left practice on Wednesday with a foot injury, which could be a significant issue for the team.
Sewell, who was an All-Pro last season, was checked by the team’s medical staff after leaving the field.
The Lions, who won the NFC North last season, are relying on Sewell to protect quarterback Jared Goff and help create openings for running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
Detroit will play against Pittsburgh on Saturday in their final preseason game.
The Lions have invested heavily in Sewell, who is starting his fourth season. He signed a four-year, $112 million extension in the offseason, keeping him with the team through 2029.
Detroit general manager Brad Holmes chose Sewell with his first pick for the team, selecting him No. 7 overall out of Oregon in 2021, and Sewell has lived up to that choice.
Sewell has started 50 regular-season games in three years and all three playoff games last season, helping the Lions reach the NFC championship game for the first time since the 1991 season.
