The Kansas City Chiefs have added quarterback Bailey Zappe to their practice squad following his release from the New England Patriots. Zappe, who was a fourth-round draft pick by the Patriots in 2022, will act as the team’s third-string quarterback behind Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz. This move provides the Chiefs with additional depth at the quarterback position.
The signing of Zappe was initially reported by NFL Network, highlighting the Chiefs’ strategic decision to bolster their quarterback lineup. Zappe’s role will be crucial in providing support and potential preparation for future games, as he will be available for practice and possible activation if needed.
In addition to Zappe, the Chiefs also signed running back Samaje Perine to their active roster. Perine, who was recently released by the Denver Broncos, brings seven years of NFL experience with him. Last season, he had a notable performance with the Broncos, rushing for 238 yards and catching a career-high 50 passes.
Zappe’s preseason performance with the Patriots was modest. He completed 15 of 25 passes for 137 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions. Despite starting the preseason opener and having the most snaps among quarterbacks, his playing time significantly decreased in subsequent games as the Patriots focused on other rookies.
With the Patriots drafting quarterbacks Drake Maye and Joe Milton III, Zappe’s position became tenuous. Despite his previous experience and career statistics of 192 completions for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, his limited playtime in the preseason and the influx of new talent contributed to his release. Zappe’s goal to reduce turnovers was achieved, as he finished the 2024 practices without any turnovers.
