The New York Jets have bolstered their safety position by signing Lewis Cine, a former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, to their practice squad. This move, confirmed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, is aimed at adding depth to the Jets’ secondary.
Cine, who was drafted 32nd overall in 2022, had been waived by the Vikings earlier in the week after trade efforts failed. The Jets are hopeful that Cine will soon be integrated into their 53-man roster once he becomes familiar with their playbook.
Cine’s career has been marred by injury and limited playing time. He suffered a significant leg fracture during his rookie season, which has hindered his ability to make an impact on the field.
Over his first two seasons, he has played only 10 defensive snaps, recording just one tackle. Despite these setbacks, Cine showed potential during the preseason, leading his team with 150 snaps and accumulating 13 tackles along with one sack.
Currently, the Jets’ starting safeties are Tony Adams and Chuck Clark, with Ashtyn Davis and Isaiah Oliver serving as backups. Oliver, who was originally a cornerback, was shifted to safety in the offseason. With Cine’s arrival, there is an expectation that he might return to his previous position of nickelback, which could potentially shift the team’s defensive strategy.
In addition to signing Cine, the Jets also claimed Brenden Bates, a former tight end for the Chicago Bears, off waivers. This move further indicates the Jets’ intent to strengthen their roster and adapt their lineup ahead of the new season.
Cine’s departure from the Vikings marks the end of a disappointing chapter for one of the least productive first-round picks in recent history. His initial promise was overshadowed by injury and struggles to adapt to the defensive scheme under new coordinator Brian Flores. His performance was further hampered by a lower-body injury in the summer, which contributed to his diminished role and eventual release.
