Joey Bosa, an outside linebacker for the Los Angeles Chargers, recently revealed that he suffered a broken hand during a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams on August 4. The injury required surgery, but Bosa has since returned to practice, equipped with a protective black club on his left hand. This club, made of cast material tape and padding, helps stabilize and protect the injured hand while allowing him to continue playing.
Despite the injury, Bosa assured reporters that it would not impact his availability for the Chargers’ games. He expressed his frustration and initial negative thoughts following the injury but noted that he has managed to stay optimistic. Bosa mentioned that while he went through a tough period, he received good news and has moved past the worst of it.
Bosa shared concerns about losing strength during his recovery but reported having “three really good practices” recently, demonstrating that he still possesses significant power. However, he admitted that his conditioning requires improvement. Bosa did not provide a specific timeline for when he would be able to play without the club, emphasizing the importance of not rushing his recovery to avoid further complications.
Injuries have been a recurring issue for Bosa in recent seasons. Although he was a dominant player early in his career, making four Pro Bowls in his first six years, injuries have hindered his performance. Bosa has struggled with various injuries over the past two years, missing significant playing time, which led to speculation about a potential trade or release. Instead, he agreed to a pay cut in March to stay with the Chargers.
Bosa’s current contract includes an $8 million guaranteed base salary for this season, with no guaranteed money for 2025, possibly making this his last season with the Chargers. Despite the challenges, Bosa remains confident about his performance and is focused on completing another full week of practice.
