Jermaine Johnson and the New York Jets are aware that Haason Reddick could significantly enhance their pass rush if and when he returns.

While some people outside the team are concerned about how Reddick’s absence will impact the defensive line for their game against San Francisco on Monday night, the players in the locker room are determined to make life difficult for Brock Purdy and the 49ers, regardless of Reddick’s status.

“I’m focused on my own role,” Johnson said on Friday. “Reddick is dealing with his situation, and we all support him and look forward to his return when he’s ready.

“But we’re confident that we’re going to make a strong impact.”

The Jets have been training all offseason without Reddick, who is still away while negotiating a new contract.

Even though they hope Reddick will eventually join them, the rest of the defense is prepared to perform well in their season opener against the defending NFC champions.

Jermaine Johnson participates in the practice

“You can ask the teams we practiced against and you’ll see on Monday,” Johnson said, referring to practices with Washington, Carolina, and the Giants. “I think we’re all feeling pretty confident.”

With Bryce Huff leaving for Philadelphia and John Franklin-Myers traded to Denver, the Jets acquired Reddick in late March. The plan was to have Johnson on one edge and Reddick, who has had double-digit sacks in each of the past four seasons, on the other.

For now, those plans are on hold.

“On the defensive line, we always adjust and rotate every play,” linebacker C.J. Mosley said. “So, the absence of some players doesn’t really affect us.”

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich expresses strong confidence in his line, which has been a major strength for the Jets.
