For the second week in a row, the Ducks had a tough game but managed to win. Atticus Sappington kicked a 25-yard field goal as time ran out, giving No. 7 Oregon a 37-34 win over a tough Boise State team on Saturday night.
Dillon Gabriel passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks (2-0), who were behind the Broncos (1-1) with 10 minutes remaining.
The previous week, Oregon won 24-14 against Idaho in a game that was also closer than expected.
“As a team still finding our identity, I think you see us becoming more connected each week through practice and games,” Gabriel said. “We faced challenges and managed to win.”
Ashton Jeanty ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns for Boise State, which came into the game as 18 1/2-point underdogs but nearly pulled off an upset.
The Broncos (1-1) briefly took the lead 34-27 in the fourth quarter when Jeanty scored on an 8-yard run. However, Noah Whittington had a 99-yard kickoff return, which ended with Jayden Limar recovering the ball in the end zone, tying the game just 16 seconds later.
Despite the difficulties, Oregon extended its nonconference home winning streak to 34 games, the longest active streak in the nation.
“I feel relieved because of the win,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “But we need to focus on the process, and there are many things we need to address and improve.”
Boise State took an early lead with a field goal by Jonah Dalmas in the first quarter. Oregon’s offense struggled at first, but Gabriel connected with Evan Stewart on a 67-yard pass and then scored himself on a keeper.
