Even though Penn State’s defense had one of its worst halves in years, Tom Allen didn’t need to get loud during halftime on Saturday.

The new defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions believed his players could bounce back with some focus.

“You can’t take anyone for granted,” said Penn State safety Jaylen Reed. “I felt like we came out a little slow, not up to our standard.” After halftime, the team improved.

Drew Allar threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Penn State’s defense stepped up after a shaky first half to help No. 8 Penn State beat Bowling Green 34-27.

Nick Singleton scored twice, Omari Evans caught a touchdown pass, and Sander Sahaydak kicked two field goals for Penn State (2-0), which was behind at halftime after a tough first half against a determined Bowling Green team.

Connor Bazelak throws a pass in the 1st quarter

Last season, the Nittany Lions only allowed 24 or more points twice, but Bowling Green managed to score on four of its six first-half possessions, leading 24-20 at halftime. Home fans reacted with boos.

“The last three years (Bowling Green) beat Minnesota, they beat Georgia Tech, Michigan last year was 14-6 at the half, 32 seniors,” said Penn State coach James Franklin. “They played their tails off. The moment wasn’t too big for them.”

However, the Falcons’ lead at halftime wasn’t enough, especially after Penn State’s defense found its form in the second half.

The defense forced three straight punts and intercepted Bazelak to end the Falcons’ next two drives in the fourth quarter.

Penn State took the lead for good when Allar connected with Singleton for a 14-yard touchdown in the middle of the third quarter.
