Jason Heyward hit a two-run home run early in the game, and Jon Singleton had three hits, including a go-ahead RBI single during a four-run eighth inning for Houston. The Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 6-3 on Thursday.
In the eighth inning, Brent Rooker homered off Ryan Pressly (2-3) to tie the game at 2.
Yainer Diaz and Kyle Tucker hit singles with one out, which led to T.J. McFarland (2-3) being replaced by Grant Holman. Singleton’s single to center field scored Diaz and gave the Astros the lead.
“His contributions have been huge,” manager Joe Espada said. “He delivers big hits, has quality at-bats, and can walk. Jon has been excellent.”
Singleton has played less recently as Espada has been trying different players at first base.
“You just need to perform well when you get the chance,” Singleton said. “I’m thankful for every opportunity.”
Jake Meyers added a run-scoring double, and Heyward was intentionally walked to load the bases. Mauricio Dubón then singled to left field, bringing in two more runs to make it 6-2.
“When we manage to extend our lead and get significant hits from everyone, we end up scoring runs late in the game,” Espada said.
In the ninth, Tyler Nevin hit a solo home run off Josh Hader, but Hader retired the next two batters to finish the game.
Houston’s Framber Valdez allowed five hits and one run with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings, helping the Astros avoid a sweep and break a three-game losing streak.
Oakland starter Mitch Spence gave up seven hits and two runs in seven innings.
“Spence was outstanding,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “He gave us everything he had for seven solid innings against a strong lineup. This kid just keeps impressing.”
