The Miami Dolphins are once again facing uncertainty at the quarterback position.

Just a week after starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion, backup Skylar Thompson left the game in the third quarter during Sunday’s 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Thompson had what coach Mike McDaniel described as a painful rib injury, leaving the Dolphins with more questions about their quarterback situation after just three weeks of the season.

Thompson’s last play was a 5-yard pass to De’Von Achane with 9:46 left in the third quarter. However, he took a hard hit earlier in the game when Seahawks linebacker Tyrel Dodson sacked him, one of five sacks he faced that day.

Thompson completed 13 of 19 passes for 107 yards before being replaced by Tim Boyle.

“Half the pain or half of the frustration for him, I think, was that he was really trying to find a way to not come out of the game,” McDaniel said. “And ultimately, it was pretty painful. He fought through it, but we’ll get a chance to look at him tomorrow.”

Thompson was slow to get up after the hit from Dodson and seemed slightly hunched over as he left the field. He returned for the next series but stayed down for several minutes after throwing the pass to Achane. He lay on his back for a bit before sitting up and walking directly to the locker room.

The injury to Thompson came just over a week after Tagovailoa suffered his third concussion in two years during a loss to Buffalo. Tagovailoa has been placed on injured reserve, meaning he won’t be available for at least four games.

McDaniel did not share what the Dolphins’ plan will be for the upcoming week if Thompson cannot play in their home game against Tennessee next Monday night. Miami recently signed Tyler Huntley from the Ravens’ practice squad, and he served as the third quarterback on Sunday.

McDaniel sounded hopeful that the rest of the talented offense would be able to recover, even as the team faces a challenging situation at quarterback.
