The Los Angeles Chargers continue to struggle with injuries, even with new leadership and a state-of-the-art training facility. After their 20-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, they are now facing injury issues with four starters.

The main concerns are on offense. Quarterback Justin Herbert is dealing with a high right ankle sprain and might not practice this week. He was taken out of the game in the third quarter and was seen wearing a walking boot afterward.

Backup Taylor Heinicke came in for Herbert and completed both of his passes for 24 yards. Despite his limited movement, Herbert started strong, hitting his first nine passes and finishing with 12 completions on 18 attempts for 125 yards and a touchdown.

Coach Jim Harbaugh mentioned on Monday that follow-up X-rays on Herbert’s ankle were negative, and there might be an MRI in the next few days.

If Herbert is able to play, he will be without both starting offensive tackles. Rookie right tackle Joe Alt is expected to miss several weeks due to a sprained MCL he sustained late in the game, even though he played all 46 offensive snaps.

Left tackle Rashaun Slater also faced issues, suffering a strained pectoral muscle in the first half. He was taped up but couldn’t continue in the second half.

When asked about the statuses of Alt and Slater, Harbaugh said he didn’t have any new information but would provide updates by Wednesday. Edge rusher Joey Bosa aggravated a hip issue on the first drive and did not return, having already dealt with a back problem earlier this month.

Harbaugh indicated that if Heinicke or Easton Stick had to step in for Herbert, the game plan would change. He noted that Heinicke performed well in the game, making smart decisions and showing a good understanding of the plays.
