The Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence a contract extension this offseason that placed him among the top quarterbacks in the league, but he hasn’t lived up to that promise so far this season.
Lawrence and the Jaguars lost a 10-point lead to the Dolphins in their first game and were overwhelmed by the Browns. Then, they completely fell apart in a 47-10 loss to the Bills on Monday night. During that game, Lawrence threw an interception in the second quarter, which marked a turning point, and ended up going 21-for-38 for 178 yards.
He hasn’t managed to complete 60 percent of his passes in any of the first three games, and the Jaguars have now lost the last eight games he’s started. This isn’t what anyone expected from the first overall pick of the 2021 draft.
“I’ve got to play really well for us to win,” Lawrence said, via the Associated Press. “That’s the NFL. The quarterback has to play well every week in order to give us a shot to win. I don’t feel like I’ve done that consistently enough. So I put that on myself.”
Last season, Lawrence’s struggles were blamed on Urban Meyer’s poor coaching, but that excuse doesn’t apply anymore. The Jaguars need to identify the real problems if they want to avoid regrets about building their future around Lawrence.
