Joe Tippmann gave a straightforward explanation of why the New York Jets have been the best team in the NFL on third downs this season. “Aaron Rodgers,” the center said with a laugh.
It seems that having the experienced quarterback has made a big difference, as the Jets have converted 21 of 37 chances (56.8%) in their first three games. This is a huge improvement from last year, when New York had the lowest conversion rate in the league at 26%.
“He’s someone who communicates well, helping us make the right calls and plays,” Tippmann said about Rodgers. “He breaks down the defense even before they show their plans. With him getting us on the same page, he has time to work and create plays.”
Rodgers and the Jets (2-1) will aim to continue their success on third downs this Sunday at MetLife Stadium against star cornerback Patrick Surtain II and the Denver Broncos’ strong defense (1-2), which ranks third in the league.
The Broncos have limited opponents to a 30.6% conversion rate on third downs, which is eighth best in the NFL.
“The front is really good,” Rodgers said. “The linebackers are athletic and can cover the field. Pat is one of the best in the league, and their secondary is playing well. They’ve shown solid defense in three games, so this will be a good challenge for us.”
The same applies to rookie quarterback Bo Nix and the Broncos’ offense, which will take on the Jets’ seventh-ranked defense.
Nix, who was the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft, has yet to throw a touchdown pass. However, he made history by becoming one of only three Broncos to throw for 200 yards and rush for 40 in a game, achieving this in Denver’s 26-7 win over Tampa Bay last week, marking their first victory.
