Patrick Ewing, the all-time leading scorer for the New York Knicks, has officially returned to the franchise as an ambassador, where he will play a role in both basketball and business operations. The 62-year-old NBA legend will collaborate closely with head coach Tom Thibodeau and the Knicks’ front office. His return marks a pivotal moment for the team, bringing back one of the most iconic figures in its history to assist in guiding its future endeavors both on and off the court.

Ewing expressed his enthusiasm for rejoining the organization, emphasizing his deep connection to the Knicks and New York City. He recalled the moment when his No. 33 jersey was retired at Madison Square Garden, reinforcing his belief that the Garden has always been his home. Ewing shared his excitement about working with Leon Rose, Coach Thibodeau, and the team, and looks forward to contributing to the success of the franchise that he holds so dearly.

Drafted by the Knicks as the No. 1 overall pick in 1985, Ewing anchored the team’s roster for over 15 years. His tenure saw the Knicks through one of their most successful eras, which included two NBA Finals appearances in 1994 and 1999. Ewing’s leadership and talent were instrumental in bringing stability and competitiveness to the Knicks during that period, making his legacy within the franchise a lasting one.

After retiring from playing in 2002, Ewing embarked on a coaching career, serving as an assistant coach with several NBA teams including the Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets, and Houston Rockets. He also worked alongside Coach Thibodeau during his time with the Rockets under Jeff Van Gundy. In 2017, Ewing became the head coach of his alma mater, Georgetown University, where he led the team to a Big East tournament title in 2021. However, he was released in 2023 after two difficult seasons.

Ewing’s return coincides with a time of renewed excitement among Knicks fans. The team made an impressive run to the Eastern Conference semifinals last season, and Ewing, along with other former Knicks legends like John Starks, was often seen courtside, receiving standing ovations from fans. His presence brings added excitement and nostalgia to Madison Square Garden, strengthening the bond between the team’s past and present as they aim for continued success in the coming seasons.
