Kyler Murray’s day began with an exciting 50-yard touchdown run, during which he celebrated by pointing to the end zone almost right after he crossed the line of scrimmage.
It ended with him leading the Arizona Cardinals into position for a field goal, then watching as his team’s backup kicker and the defense stepped up in the final moments.
Chad Ryland kicked a 35-yard field goal with 1:37 left on the clock, and Kyzir White intercepted a pass from Brock Purdy, helping Arizona secure a 24-23 comeback win against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
“I hated it,” Murray said about not being in control at the end. “I didn’t want to give them the ball back. I was hoping we could convert and finish the game our way. That didn’t happen. Chad did a great job with the field goal, and the defense came up big.”
Murray had a strong game with his touchdown run, a touchdown pass, and a crucial drive at the end, but he also received a lot of support.
James Conner rushed for 86 yards and scored on a 2-point conversion, while Marvin Harrison Jr. made a key catch on fourth down during the winning drive. The defense also did well, shutting out the 49ers in the second half and creating three turnovers.
This performance was a big change from last week, when the Cardinals (2-3) lost 42-14 at home to Washington.
“We wanted to get to the fourth quarter with a chance to win, and that’s what we did,” coach Jonathan Gannon said. “Last week wasn’t a good showing for us. They took that to heart.”
This was the second time this season that San Francisco (2-3) lost a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter to a rival team, having done so earlier against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3.
