In the unusual situation of an agency firing a client, there is usually a reason behind it. Three days after CAA let go of Jets defensive end Haason Reddick, one possible reason has come to light.
According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Media, Reddick chose not to go forward with a one-year deal that was “all but worked out” between CAA and the Jets.
The exact timing isn’t clear, but the report mentions it was “early in the season.” The offer would have “made [Reddick] whole and much more,” helping him recover the millions in fines he faced for holding out.
Without more details, it’s hard to judge whether Reddick should have accepted the deal.
At this point, both the Jets and CAA have reasons to portray him as unreasonable. (And of course, CAA wouldn’t have fired him if they didn’t believe he was being difficult.)
In any case, Reddick decided he didn’t want the offer, and CAA eventually chose not to represent him anymore.
As it stands, Reddick will miss his sixth game of the season on Monday night. He currently has no agent, the deadline for returning in 2024 is coming up, and the Jets might make some moves that could speed up Reddick’s return and help him get credit for the current season—allowing him to become a free agent in 2025.
That leaves one main question. Will he stay away past the deadline to meet the final year of his contract, or will he return just in time to prepare for hitting the market in March?
