Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye avoided questions about his knee on Friday and said he’s ready to start his second game when New England plays the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium.
Maye, who was the No. 3 pick in this year’s NFL draft, mentioned he’s “feeling good” even though he appeared on the injury report this week with a knee concern.
“These last two days felt good out there at practice, feeling good now and ready to go for Sunday,” Maye said at a press conference at the Harrow School.
Maye was a bright spot in New England’s 41-21 loss to the Houston Texans last week. He fully participated in practice on Wednesday and Thursday before the team left for London, and he practiced again on Friday.
He chose not to share when the knee issue started: “Injuries are something that you don’t really try to share with the media, so looking forward to Sunday.”
Patriots coach Jerod Mayo, when asked about whether Maye had an MRI, said he didn’t want to talk about medical details.
“What I will say is I’m confident that he’ll be ready to play,” Mayo said.
Maye “looks good” and has been taking most of the first-team practice reps, according to the coach.
In his first NFL start, Maye threw three touchdown passes but also had three turnovers, leading to the Patriots (1-5) losing their fifth straight game.
Running back Rhamondre Stevenson practiced for the first time since missing the game against Houston due to a foot injury.
“I feel like I should be ready to play on Sunday,” the fourth-year running back said.
Stevenson, who has averaged 4.6 yards per carry over five games, will be a game-time decision, according to Mayo.
His return would be helpful for an offense that wants to focus on the run to take pressure off Maye. Stevenson’s status was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.
