New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III has come to an agreement on a four-year contract extension worth $112 million, a source told The Associated Press on Monday.
Murphy is about to start the last season of his rookie contract. Without this extension, he would have been set to become a restricted free agent next offseason. The source requested to remain anonymous because the Pelicans have not officially announced the extension.
The 24-year-old Murphy was a first-round draft pick in 2021 from Virginia. Last season, he averaged a career-high of 14.8 points while playing in 57 games and starting in 23 of them.
He has a 39.2% shooting rate from 3-point range over his three seasons and is known for his ability to make impressive dunks, which earned him a spot in the NBA All-Star weekend dunk contest in the past.
Murphy injured his right hamstring during the second practice of the Pelicans’ training camp in Nashville earlier this month.
He is not expected to be ready to play when New Orleans starts the regular season against Chicago on Wednesday.
