The Spanish league is seeking permission to hold a match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Miami this December.

The league announced that its U.S. partner, Relevent Sports, is working with FIFA to ensure the match can be played outside Spain.

About five years ago, the league attempted to hold a regular season match in the United States, but those plans were stopped due to opposition from Spain’s soccer federation and the players’ union.

Holding the match in another country is part of the league’s effort to promote soccer and its brand internationally. The league has been expanding globally to compete with the strong English Premier League.

Some critics argue that playing games abroad would lead to unfair competition in the league.
