The French league appeals commission has confirmed the decision requiring Paris Saint-Germain to pay Kylian Mbappé 55 million euros ($60 million) in unpaid wages.
Last month, the LFP legal commission ruled in favor of Mbappé, but PSG claimed they did not owe him any money and appealed the decision. The case was reviewed again on October 15, and the ruling remained the same on Friday.
“(PSG) must pay him the parts of his salary he is claiming,” the LFP told The Associated Press in an email. “This decision is not subject to (further) appeal, but can be raised before the executive committee of the FFF (French Football Federation).”
PSG accused Mbappé of showing “bad faith” and said they plan to challenge the verdict again, without giving more details.
Mbappé had previously turned down a mediation offer from the commission in his dispute with PSG, stating that the club owed him three months’ salary and the last part of a loyalty bonus.
He joined Real Madrid this summer on a free transfer after scoring a club-record 256 goals in seven years with PSG.
PSG argued that when Mbappé was out before the 2023-24 season—following his choice not to extend his contract—there was a verbal agreement with him that he would give up bonuses to return to the team.
“PSG will be forced to take the case to the appropriate courts while still trying to find a friendly solution with the player, despite ongoing bad faith,” the club stated.
They mentioned that Mbappé enjoyed “unprecedented benefits” at the club.
“PSG will have to have the player’s bad faith judged by the appropriate courts if he sadly continues to pursue this confusingly damaging dispute,” the club continued. “This is fundamentally about good faith, honesty, upholding values, and respecting the institution of Paris (Saint-Germain) and its fans.”
Mbappé’s time with PSG ended amid significant tensions, and some fans booed him during his final home game at Parc des Princes.
The France captain has scored eight goals in 13 matches for Madrid ahead of Saturday’s clasico against Barcelona.
PSG felt betrayed by Mbappé after offering him the most lucrative contract in the club’s history when he signed a new deal in 2022.
However, Mbappé was frustrated because he believed that promises to sign important players were not fulfilled. When he signed that contract, he was presented to fans holding a jersey with the number 2025 on it, but he was reportedly upset because the deal only ran until 2024, with an option for an extra year.
Mbappé shocked PSG in June last year by telling the club he would not take the option for an extra year on his contract. This meant his deal was effectively in its final year, putting PSG in a situation where they needed to sell him to avoid losing him for free when the contract ended.
His time at PSG could have ended in the summer of 2023 due to a tense transfer standoff. After he informed the club that he would not extend his contract, Mbappé was excluded from a preseason tour to Japan and South Korea and had to train with backup players.
PSG stated they would rather sell him than allow him to leave for free in 2024, but he turned down a €300 million move to Saudi team Al-Hilal.
PSG did not include Mbappé in the opening league game of that season, but he quickly returned to the lineup after discussions.
