Quarterback Bryce Young will start again for the Carolina Panthers this Sunday as they face off against the New Orleans Saints. This game may also mark the NFL debut of rookie running back Jonathon Brooks, who has spent the early part of the season rehabbing from ACL surgery he had in November 2023 while at the University of Texas. If activated to the 53-man roster, Brooks would join Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders in the backfield.
Young’s starting opportunity arises while veteran Andy Dalton continues to recover from a sprained thumb he suffered in a recent car accident. Dalton was able to participate fully in practice on Wednesday and is expected to back up Young. Coach Dave Canales emphasized the importance of ensuring that Dalton is fully ready to return to play, expressing a desire to take the decision out of Dalton’s hands and allowing Young another chance to gain invaluable experience on the field.
In his first matchup against the Saints earlier this season, Young struggled significantly, completing only 13 of 30 passes for 161 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions, leading to a heavy 47-10 loss. After that performance, Dalton took over as the starter. Young’s most recent start against the Denver Broncos saw him improve, completing 24 of 37 passes for 224 yards, but he still threw two interceptions in a 28-14 defeat.
While Brooks is not expected to start in this game, he could receive some playing time behind Hubbard if he is deemed ready. There were early speculations that Brooks might take over for Hubbard once he becomes a free agent after the season; however, the team appears committed to re-signing Hubbard long-term, aiming to retain both running backs for the future. Canales mentioned he would assess Brooks in practice over the next few days before deciding on his activation, which must happen before the window closes next Wednesday.
The Panthers are also dealing with a roster change after trading wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Baltimore Ravens. Young spoke highly of Johnson, praising his competitive drive and commitment to improvement. Reports suggest the Panthers had been exploring trade options for Johnson for weeks, with interest from multiple teams before the Ravens secured the deal. Canales opted not to discuss any potential locker room issues that may have influenced the decision, stating that such matters would remain internal.
