Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith had a mixed performance during Sunday’s game against the Rams, which ended in a 26-20 overtime loss. While he made some good plays, he also committed serious mistakes, and that’s what he focused on after the game.
Smith threw three interceptions, two of which happened when the Seahawks were close to scoring. One of those interceptions was returned 103 yards for a touchdown by Kamren Kinchens, giving the Rams the lead in the fourth quarter. However, Smith managed to help his team tie the game with his third touchdown pass in the final minute.
In overtime, the Seahawks started strong but decided not to kick a field goal when they reached the Rams’ 16-yard-line. Running back Kenneth Walker was stopped on a crucial fourth down, allowing the Rams to score the winning touchdown shortly after. Smith began his postgame press conference by apologizing.
“First of all, I want to start off by apologizing to my teammates, really, and to the city, to the organization,” Smith said, according to the team’s website.
“They put a lot of trust in me with my decision-making, and when they put the ball in my hands, when my teammates play the way they played today and give us a shot to win the game, I’ve got to make sure we do.
The things I did today, mistakes that I made, they affected us negatively and really cost us the game today. Me knowing myself, I know how much this is going to hurt. I’m going to step it up, though. That’s how I feel about it. I’m going to step it up.”
This game reflects Smith’s performance throughout the season, as he has 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions so far. This inconsistency has contributed to the team’s 4-5 record, and improving his play will be crucial if the Seahawks want to make a playoff run in their last eight games.
