Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson confirmed that the “Trevor Lawrence Watch” will continue for a second week as the team prepares for their upcoming game against the Detroit Lions on November 17. Pederson revealed that he doesn’t have a clear update on Lawrence’s availability for the game, following his absence in the Jaguars’ 12-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Lawrence is dealing with a left shoulder sprain, and while his injury is to his non-throwing shoulder, his status remains uncertain. Pederson mentioned that the team would have more clarity after Wednesday’s practice.
The Jaguars’ coach added that there is currently no indication that Lawrence will require surgery. Despite some speculation, Pederson dismissed the notion of surgery, emphasizing that no such discussions have taken place. At this point, the team’s focus is on evaluating Lawrence’s progress in the coming days, but there is no plan for a procedure that could end his season. Pederson’s comments were aimed at calming any concerns regarding the severity of the injury and the need for a long-term solution like surgery.
With Lawrence’s status uncertain, the Jaguars have been exploring their backup options, particularly after Mac Jones struggled in relief during the Vikings game. Jones completed just 14 of 22 passes for 111 yards, with two interceptions, a fumble, and three sacks. In light of this performance, the Jaguars signed C.J. Beathard from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. Beathard, who had previously been with the Jaguars, could be an option if Lawrence remains sidelined, though Pederson stopped short of committing to Beathard as a potential starter without further clarity on Lawrence’s situation.
Pederson expressed confidence in Beathard’s readiness, noting that the backup quarterback prepares as if he is going to play every week. While Pederson did not make any promises regarding Beathard’s role against Detroit, he confirmed that the team would ensure Beathard is fully prepared should he be called upon to start in Lawrence’s absence. The Jaguars are focused on being flexible, with Beathard potentially stepping in if Jones’ performance continues to falter.
In addition to the quarterback concerns, the Jaguars are also monitoring the status of offensive guard Ezra Cleveland, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury. Pederson shared that Cleveland could begin practicing again on Wednesday and might participate in a limited capacity. Meanwhile, running back Tank Bigsby also dealt with an ankle issue during the Vikings game but was able to return to action. Pederson reassured that Bigsby’s injury wasn’t serious, and the team remains hopeful that these key players will be ready for the upcoming matchup against the Lions.
