Right-handed pitcher Dustin May, who has been out with injuries since May 2023, has agreed to a one-year contract worth $2,135,000 with the Los Angeles Dodgers before Friday’s tender deadline.

May was part of the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series-winning team but has made only 20 starts since then.

He underwent Tommy John surgery on May 12, 2021, just 11 days after he had to leave a start in Milwaukee in the second inning after throwing a 94.3 mph fastball to Billy McKinney. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned that May felt a sharp pain while throwing a curveball earlier in that plate appearance.

May came back to the Dodgers on August 20, 2022, but had to leave a start against Minnesota on May 17, 2023, after just the first inning, when his fastball velocity dropped about 2 mph below his usual average. He underwent a second Tommy John surgery on July 18, 2023.

May is expected to return to action in the second half of the 2024 season. This past July, he also had surgery to repair a tear in his esophagus.

In his five seasons with the Dodgers, May has a 12-9 record with a 3.10 ERA in 34 starts and 12 relief appearances. He will be eligible for free agency after the 2025 World Series.
