Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his comeback season after suffering a serious knee injury last year.
Chubb broke his foot early in the second half of Sunday’s 21-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The four-time Pro Bowler finished the season with 332 rushing yards and four touchdowns in eight games.
This is the second consecutive season that Chubb has ended up on injured reserve. He hurt his left knee in Week 2 at Pittsburgh in 2023 but worked hard to recover and made his return this season on Oct. 20 against Cincinnati.
Chubb didn’t talk to reporters on Sunday and was seen leaving on crutches while wearing a walking boot.
Coach Kevin Stefanski said he doesn’t think Chubb will need surgery and expects him to fully recover.
The Browns (3-11) restructured Chubb’s contract before this season. He can become a free agent after this season, but he has said he wants to spend his entire career in Cleveland, where he is considered one of the team’s most beloved players.
Chubb has rushed for 6,843 yards since the Browns drafted him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He ranks third on the team’s all-time list, behind Hall of Famers Jim Brown (12,312 yards) and Leroy Kelly (7,274 yards).
Chubb ran for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2022. He has averaged 5.1 yards per carry during his seven seasons.
