Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has emerged as the favorite to win the 2024 NFL MVP Award, as per a poll conducted by The Athletic among coaches and executives. Most respondents anonymously named Mahomes as their top pick, with one general manager likening him to Michael Jordan and another emphasizing his dominance, stating that Mahomes remains the standard until proven otherwise. Despite finishing only seventh in last season’s MVP voting, Mahomes is a two-time MVP who led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl victory last season, securing his third Super Bowl MVP honor as well.

At just 28 years old, Mahomes’ resume is among the most impressive in NFL history. Over six seasons as a starter, he has been selected for six Pro Bowls, and won two regular-season MVPs, three Super Bowls, and three Super Bowl MVPs. These achievements firmly establish him as one of the league’s all-time greats. However, last season saw a statistical decline, with career lows in quarterback rating (92.6), interceptions (14), and passing yards per game (261.4). Despite these struggles, Mahomes led the Chiefs to an 11-6 record and ultimately a Super Bowl victory.

The Chiefs’ 2023 season was marked by inconsistency, especially on offense, leading some to question if they would falter in the playoffs. Instead, Mahomes guided Kansas City through a tough postseason, defeating formidable opponents like the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens. The culmination of the season was an overtime Super Bowl win against the San Francisco 49ers, where Mahomes delivered a game-winning touchdown to Mecole Hardman. This resilience solidified Mahomes’ reputation as the NFL’s preeminent quarterback.

Looking ahead to 2024, the Chiefs have bolstered their roster to enhance Mahomes’ offensive support. They signed wide receiver Hollywood Brown in free agency and drafted speedy wideout Xavier Worthy in the first round. Additionally, second-year receiver Rashee Rice is expected to improve after nearly hitting 1,000 yards as a rookie, and tight end Travis Kelce remains a reliable cornerstone of the offense. With these upgrades, Kansas City appears poised for another dominant season.

While Mahomes faces stiff competition from the likes of reigning MVP Lamar Jackson, Buffalo’s Josh Allen, and Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, the Chiefs’ offseason moves and Mahomes’ track record position him as a strong contender for his third MVP award. If Mahomes continues to excel, even amidst challenges, it seems likely that he will further cement his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
