The Dallas Cowboys held a virtual interview on Friday with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, marking the first official step in their search to replace former head coach Mike McCarthy.
Moore was the play-caller for Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott from 2019 to 2022, covering the first three years of McCarthy’s five-year contract. McCarthy took over the offensive play-calling duties when Moore left for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023. McCarthy and the Cowboys parted ways earlier this week.
Moore, a former backup quarterback who played behind Prescott in 2017 before becoming his position coach the following year, helped direct an Eagles offense this season that featured running back Saquon Barkley, who became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards. Philadelphia will host the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round on Sunday.
The Cowboys are also planning to interview two former NFL head coaches next: Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier. Saleh was let go by the New York Jets after only five games into his fourth season in 2024. Frazier, who served as the assistant head coach for the Seattle Seahawks this season, was the Minnesota Vikings’ head coach for over three years a decade ago.
Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones has also had informal discussions with Colorado coach Deion Sanders. Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback, spent five seasons with the Cowboys and played a key role in their last Super Bowl victory, which capped the 1995 season. That remains the last time the Cowboys advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs.
Jason Witten, an 11-time Pro Bowl tight end who holds multiple Cowboys franchise records, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate. Witten has coached at a private school in the Dallas area since retiring for the second time after the 2020 season.
