Australia has officially joined the list of international destinations set to host an NFL regular-season game, becoming the sixth country to be awarded this opportunity.

To determine the feasibility of hosting a game, the league conducted visits to both Melbourne and Sydney. After assessing potential venues, officials selected the Melbourne Cricket Ground to stage the first-ever NFL matchup in the Asia-Pacific region during the 2026 season.

As part of this multi-year agreement, the Los Angeles Rams have been designated as the ‘home’ team for the inaugural game at the MCG, a stadium that accommodates approximately 100,000 spectators.

Expansion Efforts Strengthen NFL’s Global Presence

NFL executive vice-president Peter O’Reilly emphasized the role of international games in broadening the sport’s appeal.

“These games have been among the most effective ways to expand our presence globally,” O’Reilly stated. “They play a crucial role in increasing engagement at all levels and sustaining interest year-round.”

With its commitment to reaching new audiences, the league staged its first game in South America this season, hosting a matchup in São Paulo, Brazil.

O’Reilly indicated that the Melbourne contest would “likely” take place in Week 1 of the 2026 season, mirroring the scheduling of the Brazil game to ease the transition for participating teams.

Future International Games Continue to Take Shape

During Super Bowl week in New Orleans, the Melbourne announcement was made, with additional updates expected regarding the international games slated for next season.

At present, five games have been confirmed, with Madrid and Berlin preparing to host their first-ever matchups in 2025, while London will once again welcome three contests.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell previously stated that the league was aiming to schedule eight international games for 2025.

He also mentioned that a return to Brazil is anticipated, and discussions are ongoing about the possibility of holding the first NFL game in Ireland.
