India secured a commanding 2-0 lead over England in the three-match ODI series after a stellar century from captain Rohit Sharma powered them to a four-wicket victory in the second ODI on Sunday. Rohit’s aggressive knock of 119 off 90 balls, which included seven sixes and 12 fours, helped India chase down England’s total of 304 in just 44.3 overs. Despite a brief interruption due to floodlight failure, the Indian captain remained unfazed, guiding his team to a crucial win.

England’s Strong Start Overshadowed by Rohit Sharma’s Masterclass

Opting to bat first at Barabati Stadium, England posted a competitive 304 all out with one ball remaining. Openers Ben Duckett (65) and Phil Salt (26) laid a solid foundation with an 81-run stand. Joe Root (69) and Jos Buttler (34) continued to build on the momentum, taking England to a strong position at 219-3 in the 39th over. However, India struck back with crucial wickets, causing a collapse that saw England slump to 272-7 in the 48th over. Liam Livingstone’s quickfire 41 helped England cross the 300-run mark, but the total proved insufficient.

Rohit Sharma, struggling for form in recent matches, announced his return in spectacular fashion. He reached his half-century in just 30 balls and continued to dominate England’s bowlers. His 136-run partnership with Shubman Gill (60) provided India with a solid foundation. Although Jamie Overton and Adil Rashid dismissed Gill and Virat Kohli (5) respectively, Rohit maintained the momentum, bringing up his 32nd ODI century with a six off Rashid. However, he eventually fell to a brilliant catch by Rashid off Livingstone’s bowling.

Late Stumble but India Seals Victory

Despite Rohit’s heroics, India’s chase had nervous moments. Shreyas Iyer contributed a fluent 44 but was run out, while KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya fell cheaply. Axar Patel (41*), however, ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding India to victory with his composed innings. His finishing touch dashed any hopes England had of leveling the series.

England captain Jos Buttler admitted they fell short of an ideal total, stating they needed someone to capitalize and push the score closer to 350. England also faced a setback with Jacob Bethell missing the match due to a hamstring injury, making his participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy uncertain. Tom Banton has been brought in as cover. The teams will now head to Ahmedabad for the final ODI on Wednesday, with India looking for a series whitewash after having already won the preceding T20 series 4-1.
