Deebo Samuel described his departure from the San Francisco 49ers as “bittersweet,” reflecting on six seasons with the team in a heartfelt essay for The Players’ Tribune. He shared his deep bond with head coach Kyle Shanahan, calling their relationship “ridiculous” and full of ups and downs.
Despite requesting a trade, Samuel emphasized that there was no animosity between him and the organization, expressing gratitude for being sent to a preferred destination. The wide receiver also voiced excitement for his new chapter with the Washington Commanders, saying, “D.C., we coming.”
Trade to Washington Marks a New Chapter for Deebo Samuel’s Career
On Super Bowl Sunday, reports emerged that Samuel had requested a trade from the 49ers. His move to Washington became official with the league year starting on March 12. The Commanders acquired him for a fifth-round pick, a price considered a bargain for a player of his caliber.
Samuel acknowledged that while it was difficult to leave San Francisco, he appreciated how 49ers general manager John Lynch and Shanahan handled the situation, sending him to a competitive team. He recognized their decision as a testament to the strong relationship they built over the years.

During his tenure with the 49ers, Samuel proved to be a dynamic playmaker, excelling as both a receiver and a runner. He amassed 4,792 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns while also contributing 1,143 rushing yards and 20 scores.
His best season came in 2021 when he earned All-Pro honors, racking up 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns. However, after a challenging 2023 season where his production dipped to 806 yards, Samuel felt it was time for a change. He believed Washington offered a fresh opportunity to reignite his career.
Familiar Faces and a Promising Quarterback Draw Samuel to Washington
Samuel was drawn to Washington partly because of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had an impressive rookie season and won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Samuel had been following Daniels since his days at LSU, thanks to his friendship with 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, a former teammate of Daniels at Arizona State.
Additionally, Washington’s front office featured familiar faces from Samuel’s time in San Francisco, including general manager Adam Peters and run game coordinator Anthony Lynn. These connections made Washington a top choice for him.
In his essay, Samuel reminisced about his football journey, from playing Pop Warner to competing in two Super Bowls with the 49ers. He described the San Francisco locker room as having a “college vibe” and expressed appreciation for the entire organization, from coaches to equipment managers.
While he was thrilled about the trade, memories of his time with the 49ers flooded his mind. As he steps into this new chapter with Washington, Samuel remains eager to contribute, work alongside fellow receiver Terry McLaurin, and help push the Commanders to greater success.
