Ten years after a fireworks accident that altered the trajectory of his career, veteran edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul is aiming to return to the NFL. Now 36, Pierre-Paul has remained dedicated to his training regimen and football conditioning despite not being signed during the 2023 season.
In a recent interview with ESPN, he expressed his determination to earn another opportunity in the league, emphasizing that he still has the drive and physical ability to compete at a high level.
Hoping to Reunite with Giants, Pierre-Paul Eyes Emotional Return to NFL Roots
Pierre-Paul has a particular destination in mind for his potential NFL return — the New York Giants. Drafted by the franchise in the first round in 2010, he spent eight seasons in New York and became a fan favorite. “To go back somewhere where my career started… the fans know me and know the type of player that I am,” Pierre-Paul said. He believes he can still bring passion, effort, and production to the team that launched his career.

During his time with the Giants, Pierre-Paul established himself as a force on the defensive line. In 2011, he had a breakout season, tallying a career-best 16.5 sacks, earning a first-team All-Pro nod, and helping lead the team to a Super Bowl victory. That year solidified his reputation as one of the league’s premier pass rushers and laid the foundation for a successful NFL career.
Overcoming Injury, Reviving Career, and Chasing One Final NFL Opportunity with Giants
In 2015, Pierre-Paul’s career faced a major challenge when a Fourth of July fireworks accident severely injured his right hand, costing him 2.5 fingers. Despite the setback, he made a remarkable return to action later that same season and continued playing with the Giants until 2017. His perseverance and ability to adapt his playing style to accommodate his injury highlighted his mental toughness and resilience.
Following a trade to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018, Pierre-Paul enjoyed a strong resurgence, recording 12.5 sacks in his debut season and earning his second Super Bowl ring with the Bucs in 2020.
His most recent NFL action came in 2023, when he appeared briefly for the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins. Though his recent playing time has been limited, Pierre-Paul remains hopeful and prepared for one more shot — ideally with the team where it all began.
