On Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers brought in multiple free agents for workouts, including four running backs and three wide receivers. Wideouts Marquez Callaway, Andy Isabella, and Cornell Powell were among the names trying out, while quarterback Carter Bradley was believed to be throwing passes during the session. These evaluations pointed to potential shakeups as the team deals with injuries and roster inefficiencies in camp.
49ers Sign Isabella, Abdullah, Make Roster Cuts to Balance Depth and Performance Needs
Shortly after the workouts, reports from Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz indicated that Andy Isabella and Ameer Abdullah would be signed. The 49ers later confirmed these additions, alongside quarterback Carter Bradley and wide receiver Marquez Callaway. Isabella, a former second-round pick, has bounced between multiple teams and brings speed and depth. Abdullah, a seasoned back, reinforces a thinning backfield.

To accommodate the new signings, the 49ers released wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown and waived offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez, wideout Malik Knowles, and safety Jaylen Mahoney. The release of St. Brown appears tied to performance concerns, particularly his limited route-running capability, while the other cuts help balance positional depth for the ongoing training period.
Bartch Returns as Injuries and Absences Force 49ers to Reshape Offensive Depth
Amid these offensive roster moves, San Francisco also got a welcome return on the offensive line. Guard Ben Bartch was activated from the Active/Non-Football Injury list and is considered the leading candidate to start at left guard. His return injects experience and stability into a line that continues to rotate players during camp evaluations.
The 49ers’ activity is rooted in temporary roster shortages. With Brandon Aiyuk still unavailable, Jacob Cowing recovering, and Ricky Pearsall on rest days, the wide receiver group needed short-term reinforcements, hence the addition of Isabella and Callaway.
In the backfield, with Christian McCaffrey on a light workload plan and Israel Abanikanda released, Abdullah helps fill immediate needs. The signing of Carter Bradley, son of assistant coach Gus Bradley, also adds a familiar camp arm as quarterback rotations unfold.
