The Detroit Lions announced on Saturday that they have signed offensive tackle Justin Herron, parting ways with defensive tackle Raequan Williams to make room for the roster change. This move comes as the team continues to evaluate its depth along the offensive line during training camp. Williams, who had been competing for a rotational spot on the defensive front, has now become a free agent.
Injuries Stall Herron’s Promising Start After Early Success with Patriots and Raiders
Justin Herron was initially drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He showed early promise by starting 10 games in his first two seasons. However, his career trajectory shifted in 2022 when he was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. Unfortunately, just weeks after the trade, Herron tore his ACL, putting a halt to his momentum and sidelining him for the remainder of that season.

Herron returned in 2023 and appeared in six games for the Raiders, starting in one. However, he was released in December. Later, he joined the New Orleans Saints, who offered him a new opportunity.
But his chance at a comeback was again hampered by injury, a knee issue in training camp led to him spending the entire season on injured reserve. Despite these persistent setbacks, Herron has managed to stay in the conversation as a potential contributor.
Herron’s Leadership, Bravery, and Experience Add Depth Amid Lions’ Offensive Line Concerns
While injuries have challenged Herron’s career, he is also recognized for his character off the field. In 2021, he made headlines when he intervened to stop an attempted sexual assault, showcasing his bravery and presence of mind. His character and professionalism make him a valued addition in the locker room, even as he works to stay healthy and secure a roster spot.
Herron’s signing also suggests that the Lions may be concerned about the status of backup tackle Dan Skipper, who suffered a low-ankle sprain in the preseason opener and was seen in a walking boot. With Skipper’s status uncertain, Herron enters a competitive mix for the backup offensive tackle job, alongside Giovanni Manu, Jamarco Jones, and Mason Miller. His experience could prove valuable if he stays healthy and performs well during camp.
